Dr. Alaa Hashish, MD, MSc
a highly accomplished medical professional with an array of qualifications. He holds a diploma in infection prevention and hospital epidemiology, as well as a master’s degree in public health and preventive medicine. Additionally, he has a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
Before his role as a technical team lead at WHO-Oman, Dr. Hashish served as the cluster lead for Communicable Disease Prevention at the WHO-Egypt office. In this capacity, he oversaw a wide range of public health activities, including initiatives related to hepatitis, vaccination, and more. Notably, he has made significant contributions to the field of mental health, particularly for individuals living with hepatitis/HIV and migrants. Dr. Hashish’s expertise extends to his role as an editor and reviewer for medical journals and WHO guidelines. He has authored numerous publications in influential medical journals, leaving a lasting impact on the field of public health.
During the unprecedented Ebola outbreak of 2014/2015, Dr. Hashish served as an IPC consultant and played a pivotal role in WHO-Sierra Leone. His responsibilities included managing IPC projects, training healthcare workers, and contributing to the board of the Ebola training academy, where he made significant contributions to national healthcare response and resilience. In addition to his WHO contributions, Dr. Hashish’s involvement in healthcare accreditation and his work with various national committees, addressing critical issues such as viral hepatitis, immunization, and opioid substitution therapy, demonstrates his unwavering commitment to public health. Dr. Hashish is also a member of the WHO roster for investigating Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) events, reflecting his specialized expertise in this critical area of global health security.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to public health, Dr. Hashish was honored with the WHO Director-General’s Award for Excellence in 2023. This prestigious award highlights his dedication to improving healthcare standards and his significant impact on global health initiatives.
